Why do cats purr?
Lue answers for ages 4–10, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Lue says
When you stroke a cat gently, you might hear a soft, rumbly purr. Mother cats purr while their kittens feed, too. And sometimes a cat purrs when it's worried, like at the vet. So a purr is one of the ways a cat talks, and it often means the cat feels cosy.

Why does a purr sound so buzzy?
Inside a cat's throat is its voice box. When a cat purrs, tiny muscles there twitch on and off, more than twenty times every second. They keep twitching while the cat breathes in and while it breathes out. So the buzzy purr hardly ever stops.
