Where does rain come from?
Roo answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Roo says
Up in a grey cloud are lots of tiny drops of water, so tiny that they float. Inside the cloud, the drops bump into each other and join up into bigger drops. When a drop gets too heavy to float, down it falls. That's rain!

Why don't the tiny drops fall straight away?
Cloud drops are so small that the air rising up inside the cloud holds them up. To fall, they have to bump and join again and again until they're heavy enough. It takes millions of tiny cloud drops to make just one raindrop!
