Why do baby teeth fall out?
Clover answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Clover says
Your first teeth are called baby teeth, and most kids have 20 of them. Behind them, your grown-up teeth are slowly growing. Around age 5 or 6, a grown-up tooth starts pushing the baby tooth out of its way. The baby tooth gets wobbly and falls out, and the new tooth grows into the gap.

If they fall out anyway, why do baby teeth matter?
Each baby tooth saves a space in your jaw for the grown-up tooth coming behind it. If a baby tooth comes out much too early, the teeth beside it can drift into the gap. Then the grown-up tooth has less room to come through. So looking after baby teeth helps your grown-up teeth too.
