Are birds dinosaurs?

Tiny answers for ages 4–11, then goes 2 steps deeper each time a child asks why.

Painted picture for the question Are birds dinosaurs?
  1. Tiny says

Long ago, some dinosaurs walked on two legs and had feathers. Over a very, very long time, some of them got smaller and smaller, and they began to fly. They were the first birds. So the pigeon on your path is a real, living dinosaur!

  2. Why is a pigeon a dinosaur?

    T. rex belonged to a big group of dinosaurs called theropods, which walked on two legs. Over time, some theropods got smaller, and birds grew from those little ones. So a pigeon comes from the very same dinosaur family as the mighty T. rex!

  3. How did dinosaurs start to fly?

Some small, feathered dinosaurs may have moved up into the trees, looking for food or a safe place to be. Life up high might have set them on the way to flying. That change probably began about a hundred and sixty million years ago. Scientists are still piecing the story together.
