Where did the dinosaurs go?

Tiny answers for ages 4–11, then goes 2 steps deeper each time a child asks why.

Painted picture for the question Where did the dinosaurs go?
  1. Tiny says

Sixty-six million years ago, the world changed very quickly. It changed faster than the big dinosaurs could keep up with, and in time they were gone. But some small dinosaurs came through it all: the birds! Their family has been flying and singing ever since.

  2. Why did the world change so fast?

A huge rock from space, more than ten kilometres wide, hit the Earth. It sent soot drifting all around the world, so less sunlight reached the ground. With less light, plants couldn't grow as well. Plant eaters had less food, and then so did the meat eaters.

  3. Why did the birds make it through?

Birds grew from small dinosaurs, so they were little. They could eat lots of different kinds of food, and they could fly. Scientists think that mix probably helped them through the hard times. Afterwards, birds spread out to live in all sorts of places.
