Why eat lots of different coloured foods?
Clover answers for ages 4–11, then goes 2 steps deeper each time a child asks why.

Clover says
Fruits and veggies come in every colour: red strawberries, orange carrots, green broccoli, purple blueberries. Inside them are tiny helpers called vitamins. Different foods carry different vitamins. So when your plate has lots of colours, your body gets lots of different helpers.

What do the vitamins do?
Orange foods like carrots and sweet potatoes carry vitamin A, which helps your eyes see colours and see in dim light. Oranges, strawberries and broccoli carry vitamin C, which helps a cut heal. Every vitamin has a different job, so a mix of foods gives your body a whole team of helpers.

Why does the colour of a food matter?
Fruits and veggies also carry natural plant chemicals that can help protect your body. Foods of a similar colour often carry similar ones. Red tomatoes and watermelon both carry one called lycopene, and green spinach and kale share others. So a rainbow on your plate collects lots of different kinds.
