Why is the sea blue?

Wobble answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Painted picture for the question Why is the sea blue?
  1. Wobble says

Sunlight looks white, but it has every colour mixed inside it. When it shines into the sea, the water soaks up the reds and oranges. The blues are left over. So when you look out at the sea, it's mostly blue light that reaches your eyes.

  2. Then why does the sea look green some days?

Seawater often has tiny bits floating in it, like specks of sand and mud. When light bounces off those bits, the sea can look green, or even red. So the colour you see depends on what's floating in the water.
