What lives at the very bottom of the sea?
Wobble answers for ages 4–11, then goes 2 steps deeper each time a child asks why.

Wobble says
As you sink deeper into the sea, the sunlight fades away. At the very bottom it's very dark, and the water is nearly freezing. But lots of animals live down there! Long-legged crabs tiptoe over the mud, and chubby sea pigs creep along. Almost half the kinds of animals on the deep seafloor can make their own light.

Why do deep-sea animals make light?
Down at the bottom, it's too dark to see much. So a little light is a handy trick. Some animals glow to lure food closer, and others flash to confuse a hungry hunter.

What do they eat down there?
Food is hard to find on the deep seafloor, so the animals there wait for it to come to them. Tiny scraps sink slowly from the water far above, and other bits drift past in the currents. Every crumb counts down there!
