Why do stars twinkle?

Fuzz answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Painted picture for the question Why do stars twinkle?
  1. Fuzz says

Most stars shine with a steady light. That light travels a very long way to reach you. Right at the end, it passes through the air above your house, and that air is always moving and swirling. The moving air bends the starlight a tiny bit this way and that, so the star seems to twinkle.

  2. Why do some stars twinkle more?

Some stars sit low in the sky, just above the rooftops. Their light has to slant through much more air to reach you than light from stars up high. More air means more swirling, so those low stars twinkle the most.
