What makes the shadows on my wall?
Fuzz answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Fuzz says
Light shines out of your night-light in straight lines. When a toy gets in the way, it blocks some of that light. Behind the toy, the wall gets a dark patch in the toy's own shape. That's its shadow, just a place where the light can't reach.

Why are shadows so big at night?
At night, your toys are often close to a lamp or night-light. When a toy is close to the light, it blocks much more of it, so its shadow grows huge on the wall. Move the toy away from the light, and the shadow shrinks back down.
