Your child reads out loud and the words light up as they say them. Phil helps when a word gets stuck, and it all happens on the tablet.
Watch one page of Dig Here!
Read the page out loud, or name something in the picture. It listens inside this browser, so nothing you say leaves your device. The first try downloads about 30 MB.
How do you feel about this book?
Bring any book. Phil listens.
Your child shows Phil each page of their own book once, then reads it aloud.
What grown-ups ask
Does Phil record my child?
No. Listening runs on the tablet itself, and nothing your child says is recorded or sent anywhere. In Read to Phil, page photos are read on the tablet too. To name a new book, Phil looks up a few of its printed words.
Does it need the internet?
Only once. Read it out loud downloads about 30 MB the first time, and Read to Phil about 125 MB. After that, reading works without the internet.
Which books read along?
Tigers Don't Giggle, The Badly Behaved Echo, Dig Here!, Shh, Nib's Got a Trumpet!, Mmmf Doesn't Mean Me!, Open Wide, Croc!, Kisses Go BONK!. The rest of the Storytime shelf is next. Read to Phil works with any printed book, from picture books to chapter books.
Can I see how reading is going?
Yes. Read to Phil keeps the week’s minutes, pages, words per minute and tricky words, with a line to copy for the school reading record. It stays on the tablet.
