Why do we wear a hat and sunscreen?
Clover answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Clover says
Sunlight carries rays you can't see, called UV rays. If too many land on your skin, you get a sunburn, and sunburnt skin feels sore. A hat keeps the sun off your face, and sunscreen helps stop a sunburn. So you can keep playing out in the sunshine.

How does sunscreen stop a sunburn?
There are two kinds. One kind sits on top of your skin and blocks the sun's rays, like a wall. The other kind soaks the rays up like a sponge and lets them out as a little heat. A grown-up puts more on about every two hours, and again after swimming.
