Why do we sweat?
Clover answers for ages 4–9, then goes 1 step deeper each time a child asks why.

Clover says
Your body likes to stay at just the right warmth. When you run or play in the sun, you start to warm up. Your brain notices and tells tiny sweat makers in your skin to get to work. Sweat comes out through little holes called pores, and as it dries off your skin, you cool down.

Why does drying sweat cool me down?
Sweat is almost all water. On your warm skin, the air turns it into water vapour, an invisible gas that floats away. That's called evaporating, and it takes some of your heat with it. Because sweat uses up your body's water, a big sweaty play means it's time for a big drink.
